Mage upgrading

This was my strategy to use ability points:

1. Put to MP until you have 100 MP
2. Put to magic until you have used 50 ability points to magic
3. Put to dexterity until you have about 50-60% critical hit
4. Put to MP until you have about 300-500 MP
5. More dexterity..
6. When you have 100% critical hit, put ability points to HP and MP
7. When you have about 350 HP and 700 MP, put your points to magic

I used this, and I'm now lvl 162. I have 280 magic and 100% critical hit.
I think dexterity is most important to upgrade at low level. ;D

Dexterity is less important to upgrade at low levels, especially if you have a low critical multiplier. I think zxdvas proved a while back that one should wait until they have at least 140 (or some number like that) magic before putting any points in dexterity.

But it's easier to upgrade dexterity at low level. And you need dexterity later. Better earlier than too late :P

M=magic
D=dexterity
C=critical multiplier skill level

This is the base damage formula: M+MD(0.125*C+1)/300

If I put a point in magic, the damage formula will change to this: (M+1) + (M+1)(D)(0.125*C+1)/300
If I put a point in dexterity, the damage formula will change to this: M+M(D+1)(0.125*C+1)/300

Set them equal to find the optimal Magic to Dexterity ratio. It simplifies to:

2400 + 8D + CD = 8M + CM

So if 2400 + 8D + CD > 8M + CM, upgrade your Magic stat
If 2400 + 8D + CD < 8M + CM, upgrade your Dexterity stat

If you have 1 dexterity and a maxed out critical multiplier (lvl 20, which most players under lvl 100 won't have), you'll only want to start leveling dexterity when your magic is 87. If you have a level 1 critical multiplier, you'll want to wait until your magic is 268.

Critical hit multiplier and magic shots skills are most important skills to mage.
I have critical hit multiplier lvl 20 and magic shots lvl 3, so I can deal 4x4.5=18x normally damage. (and of course mp restoration is important)

This was my strategy:
Spoiler: show
Every level from 2-30, put 1 point each in magic, dexterity, and mp.
From level 31-100, put 1 point in mp and 2 points in magic.
You don't need more than 10% crit hit until after level 100.

Yours looks fine, the biggest difference from what I did is that I always equalled my defence to my magic, you didn't mention skills tho, which are more important I think: here's how I did mine:
MP Restoration (up to 20), Magic Shots (total), Guild Heal (1pt), MP Restoration (finish off), Increase Crit damage (total), Magic Distance (total), Guild Heal (finish off), Thunder Attack (total).
And this stategy took me all the way up to 300. At this point it got more complex because I realised I needed much faster movement and maxed loot stealer to be able to "roll with the big boys", and a lot more hitpoints to do well in pvp fights (I had hps far far lower than defence), and Kreetons/Beholders are much harder to kill than any of the previous steps, so I am now aiming to have magic as double my defence now and when carrying on to Reps.
